15th NSDI Workshop

Continuing in the activities of raising the level of knowledge necessary for the establishment of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure and the implementation of the INSPIRE Directive, the National Contact Point successfully held on 13. December 2018, the 15th NSDI Workshop entitled "Interoperability of NSDI Data" at the State Geodetic Administration. At the workshop, 23 participants, representatives of the NSDI subject were actively involved.

The aim of the workshop was to help subjects in understanding the linkage of spatial data sources and aspects of spatial data interoperability that are evaluated during each process of metadata harvesting from the national catalogue to INSPIRE geoportal. The final scope of this, as well as the previous 14th NSDI workshop, is to increase the number of available national records on the INSPIRE geoportal, with particular emphasis on view and download network services.

In the introductory part of the workshop, the Head of NSDI Division, Tomislav Ciceli, MSc., welcomed participants and emphasized the importance of interoperability for the functioning of spatial data infrastructure.

Afterwards, Tanja Rodin, MSc, delivered a lecture on resource linkage and aspects of spatial data interoperability. The lecture was followed by an overview of the good practice of interoperable datasets and network services on the INSPIRE geoportal.

The second part of the workshop was devoted to practical work and exercises to test aspects of interoperability. Through the stand-alone use of the INSPIRE diagnostic tool, participants learned to identify sources from their jurisdiction on the INSPIRE geoportal and understand errors related to the interoperability of spatial data.

With the help of NSDI Division staff, the participants successfully completed exercises from the script and expressed their great satisfaction that through practical work and concrete examples they could understand the principles on which INSPIRE geoportal operates and the errors that occur due to unfulfilled interoperability aspects.

The picture shows the workshop participants in practical work on concrete examples in performing exercises from the script.

A great deal of interest was shown for this kind of workshops by participants and they expressed the desire and need for organizing more practical workshops on this and on the theme of the 14th workshop.
