International GIS Day as a one-day event is celebrated for many years. The first GIS Day took place in 1999. From then until now, various institutions around the world celebrate GIS Day in different ways. GIS Day is celebrated every year the third Wednesday in November, and this year's GIS Day was celebrated globally on November 18th. For the occasion, the Croatian Agency for the Environment and Nature (HAOP) organized GIS Day entitled "GIS portals and application of GIS systems in spatial analysis and modelling" at the Croatian Chamber of Economy.

The event was attended by representatives of public authorities and the private sector, about fifty of them. They presented their solutions that are based on different technologies; both commercial and open source.
