NSDI Registers, NSDI Geoportal, GeoCroatia

What do we specify as the address of the source in the NSDI Spatial Data Source Register and in the NSDI Metadata Catalog if our spatial data or more detailed information about them is not published on our institution's website, but on another institution's website?
According to the NSDI Metadata Specification v.3.1, the address of the source must be specified if it exists, that is, if a URL is available that provides more information about the source and/or the service related to access to the source. In case your spatial data is published on e.g. on the county page, it is listed as the address of the source, and it is not necessary to publish them on your institution's website.
Is it necessary to develop a special geoportal or online GIS application with spatial data of our institution?
NSDI does not oblige NSDI subjects to develop geoportals or web GIS systems displaying spatial data from their jurisdiction. According to the NSDI Act, spatial data sources must be described with metadata in the National Metadata Catalogue (on the NSDI Geoportal) and made available for view and download via standard network services.
What is the deadline for applying to the NSDI Subject Register, the NSDI Spatial Data Source Register, entering metadata into the NSDI Metadata Catalogue on the NSDI Geoportal and development of network services?
The deadlines for the development of INSPIRE compliant network services have passed, as prescribed by the INSPIRE Directive, which was transposed into Croatian legislation by the NSDI Act (OG 56/13, 52/18, 50/20). You can access the INSPIRE establishment timeline at the following link. Therefore, if the data existed at the time of entry into force of the NSDI ACt, obligations should have already been fulfilled, including registration in the Register of NSDI Subjects, the Register of Spatial Data Sources of the NSDI, the entry of metadata into the Metadata Catalog on the NSDI Geoportal, data harmonization and the development of INSPIRE compliant network services.

If there are new data, its metadata is established at the time of creation of the source, and within one year at the latest:

Art. 13 (4) Metadata for new sources of spatial data shall be established at the time of creation of its source, and no later than one year after the entry into force of the act establishing the new source of spatial data.
What is the NSDI Geoportal and what is its purpose?
The NSDI Geoportal is a website or its equivalent established, maintained and developed by the National Contact Point for the purpose of metadata management and providing services for discovering, viewing, downloading, transforming and invoking spatial data sources and other information related to the NSDI.

The NSDI Geoportal consists of the Metadata Catalogue and the Viewer, which enable searching, downloading and browsing spatial data sources.

The NSDI Geoportal is a place where anyone can find information about spatial data under the jurisdiction of the public sector, e.g. which institution is responsible, how to access the data and under what conditions it can be further used, etc. When the data is available through network services and open for use, it can be viewed and downloaded for further use without going to the competent institutions.
What is the NSDI Metadata Catalogue and what is its purpose?
The NSDI Metadata Catalogue is one of the integral parts of the NSDI Geoportal that enables metadata discovery. The metadata of spatial data sources in the NSDI Metadata Catalogue are managed by NSDI subjects in whose jurisdiction apatial data are, and which are obliged to update them regularly. The main purpose of describing spatial data sources with metadata is to quickly, simply and efficiently collect the necessary information for decision-making purposes (decisions on suitability, compliance with certain legal regulations, verification of geographical coverage, etc.).

What is the purpose of the "Analytics Module" on the NSDI Geoportal?
One of the integral parts of the NSDI Geoportal is the "Analytics Module", available to all users at the link https://geoportal.nipp.hr/viewer/. This module is one of the newly developed NSDI products that directly demonstrates the possibilities of using interoperable data. This module is one of the newly developed NSDI products that directly demonstrates the possibilities of using interoperable data. Currently, two types of spatial analysis are enabled on data from Cadastral parcels and cadastral municipalities, the Register of Geographical Names and House Numbers of the Register of Spatial Units:
  • Finding objects in one layer within a given value of objects in another layer and
  • Finding objects in one layer intersecting with objects in another layer.

The results obtained can be downloaded, and further development of this module is underway.
What is the purpose of the "Analytics Module" on the NSDI Geoportal?
GeoCroatia is one of the core products of NSDI, established, developed and maintained by the State Geodetic Administration of the Republic of Croatia, and is intended primarily for citizens. The most important feature of this browser is the use of interoperable network services provided by the NSDI subjects to make spatial data of public authorities of the Republic of Croatia available for use by citizens. The GeoCroatia browser is available at https://www.geohrvatska.hr/, and a mobile application for iOS and Android mobile devices is also available for free download.
