On May 27th and 28th, 2024, the 14th conference dedicated to spatial data infrastructures “SDI Days 2024”, organized by the State Geodetic Administration, was held. More than 130 participants from the public, private and academic sectors attended this year’s conference.
The two-day conference "SDI Days 2024" consisted of a workshop held on May 27, 2024, dedicated to NSDI users and subjects and lectures held on May 28, 2024. dedicated to the 14th NSDI and INSPIRE Day.
On the first day of the conference the 38th NSDI workshop dedicated to NSDI subjects was held in the premises of the Central Office of the State Geodetic Administration, and was attended by more than 40 participants. The participants got an insight into the current state of NSDI, the basic products of NSDI, as well as the activities carried out by the National Contact Point to improve the quality of metadata and improve the linkage of spatial data sets and network services.
The second day of the conference, the 14th NSDI and INSPIRE day was held in the Judita hall of the National and University Library in Zagreb. The conference was officially opened by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction, Spatial Planning and State Property, Mr. Branko Bačić. In his welcoming speech, he briefly reminded the attendees of the path that the National Spatial Data Infrastructure went through from 2007 until today and emphasized the importance of NSDI and all activities carried out to make spatial data available and understandable to all users.
The attendees were also welcomed by the Director General of the State Geodetic Administration, Antonio Šustić, who pointed out the great success in the increase in the number of subjects from the local level at the Geoportal of the NSDI, so that today we register a total of 119 active subjects of the NSDI, while the number of spatial data sources on the Geoportal NSDI exceeded 1000, exactly 1032 sources, of which 497 are network services.
The head of the Spatial Data Infrastructure Sector, Ljerka Marić, MsC, and senior advisor - specialist Iva Gašparović, PhD, held an introductory presentation titled "NSDI in Croatia - where are we in 2024.?" This lecture presented the activities, tasks and achievements of the NSDI in the past period, in which the most important NSDI user applications in Croatia, Geoportal and GeoCroatia were presented in detail.
The welcoming speech and introductory presentation was followed by the first session of the conference, where colleagues from countries in our neighborhood presented the state of establishment and development of NSDI in their institutions and countries. Presentations were held by representatives of the Republic of Slovenia, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republic of North Macedonia and the Republic of Serbia, who presented the advantages of SDI, new trends and the use of infrastructure in their countries.
The conference was followed by a panel discussion entitled “The influence of new trends in the field of data on the development of NSDI”, moderated by Tomislav Ciceli, MsC, head of the NSDI Division, participated by: Lidija Suman, Ministry of Justice, Public Administration and Digital Transformation, Jarmila Pezo, The President of the Board of IGEA Ltd, prof. PhD Željko Bačić, University of Zagreb - Faculty of Geodesy, prof. PhD Vlado Cetl, Department of Geodesy and Geomatics of the University North and Antonio Šustić, General Director of the State Geodetic Administration. Panel participants commented on actual topics such as open and high-value data, data spaces, the possible impact of artificial intelligence on the development of spatial data areas, the benefits of opening data, but also the problems that arise due to their opening, and described how they see the further development of the NSDI.
The second part of the conference was followed by two sessions containing interesting lectures in the field of NSDI and spatial data. The lectures covered topics such as: the development of the Geoportal of Cultural Property and the Spatial Planning Information System, the establishment of the National Information System for land in the Republic of Croatia, the creation of a map of Coastal and Benthic Marine Habitats, development of capacities at universities, development of artificial intelligence over spatial data, use of open data and implementation of WebGIS browsers as well as big data processing methods.
We would like to thank all lecturers and participants who have helped this year's SDI Days to be interesting, useful and educational.
