Unique resource identifier

Name Unique resource identifier
Definition A value that uniquely identifies an object within a namespace.
Obligation
  • dataset or dataset series: mandatory
  • service: mandatory
Multiplicity [1..*]
Examples http://geoportal.nipp.hr/hr/nipp/pp/0007
The NSDI Contact Point associates a unique NSDI resource identifier. When filling in metadata in the Croatian NSDI system, the metadata editor should contact infonipp@dgu.hr and request a unique resource identifier. Unique resource identifier cannot be changed. An existing unique resource identifier is never deleted and may not be used for another data source. The National Contact Point of the NSDI (infonipp@dgu.hr) maintains the Register of the NSDI Spatial Data Sources, which documents the sources of NSDI data and associates unique resource identifier. If a change in the unique resource identifier has to be made, the NSDI National Contact Point will assign a new unique resource identifier and keep the old one.

It is recommended that, using certain redirection mechanisms, the unique resource identifier is also a link to a document containing information about the data source. The document must be publicly available, ie access to the document must not be restricted in any way and it must be accessible via a traditional web browser.

The unique resource identifier of a dataset or dataset series can be used to associate a service with dataset or dataset series over which it is established. In this case, a specific redirection mechanism should be implemented by which a unique resource identifier of a dataset or a dataset series, for example, takes the form of a URL (eg OGC CSW request) in W3C XPointer form referring to the gmd: MD_DataIdentification element.

Implementation instructions For each dataset, dataset series, and spatial data service, a unique identifier must be assigned in the form of a unique resource identifier (URI) consisting of code and code namespace. The code must be unique within its namespace.
