Keywords should represent spatial data in a credible and concise manner. Keywords can be selected from an existing, authorized keyword list (thesaurus) or set as standalone. If a keyword is specified from the keyword list, the keyword list (title, date, date type) must also be cited. At least one INSPIRE/NSDI spatial data theme must be specified to which the spatial data of the dataset, dataset series or services belong, by specifying the appropriate keyword from the GEMET - INSPIRE/NSDI thesaurus data theme. At least one category or subcategory from the Classification of Spatial Services according to EN ISO 19119 as a keyword for the spatial data service must be specified and referenced by stating the unique source code (URI) defined within the INSPIRE Classification of Spatial Data Services of the keyword list.

Search will analyse all keywords. Setting the keyword in the appropriate context can help a user during searching. For example, the word ‘Adriatic' can be interpreted as 'Adriatic Sea' or 'Adriatic flora' or 'Adriatic coast' or have another different context. To avoid such ambiguities, the full word should be used, 'Adriatic Sea' or 'Adriatic coast' etc. To avoid 'feigned' errors in checking metadata records, each keyword must end with a letter, and not with another sign, such as comma, space etc.  Along with mandatory keywords, arbitrary keywords can be added as free text, if the metadata editor assesses that they describe data in a proper way and help in searching. It is recommended that at least two other keywords are specified in addition to the required keywords.
